Lost Subs is a very interesting history of US and Soviet submarine accidents. It has some very clear film footage of the rescue of 33 men from the USS Sqalus in May 1939 and also uses recreations and good CGI footage to tell the story. It also has interviews with survivors. There are stories on both American and Russian submarines such as the ill fated Russian Sub the Kursk in which days went by as doomed men were trapped at the bottom when a torpedo exploded. The story on the Russian K-19 is dramatic and differs from the fictional movie version. Eight heroic men sacrificed their lives by volunteering to go into the Sub’s reactor to fix it,coming out vomiting and swelling up.They died a few days later and others died a few years later from the effects of this radioactive submarine. The sacrifice was to avoid a meltdown of K-19’s reactor. The documentary also covers the USS Portsmouth and the USS Thresher, which like K-19 was sent out too soon when it was not ready and imploded at a great depth after a power failure. The failure to rescue the men of the Kursk is followed by some dramatic footage of a grieving Russian mother confronting some Russian officers. This 54 minute and 35 second DVD also has a map detailing where and how the subs were lost.It has written and voice details with the map with all the details about the subs. All in all,a dramatic retelling that won’t put you into a hurry to go down into a submarine.

I am a fan of the National Geographic series, but the poor quality of this relatively new issue was a deep disappointment. Rather than tracing the flaws in design, production, or emergency procedures through the evolution of the submarine (as I had expected), the documentary spent a huge amount of footage on filler, including a lengthy bit of fluff about the fun-loving antics of a current submarine crew. The facts that led to the demise or near-demise of each submarine were glossed over, while the camera dwelt at great length on the anguish of a few of the survivors. The incidents were presented nearly free of scientific content or historic context.

Poor, abandoned kitten Oliver is homeless on the streets of 1980s New York City, until he meets a streetwise dog named Dodger. The cool canine takes Oliver under his wing and, with the help of the rest of his all-dog pickpocket gang, begins to teach him how to survive on the wrong side of the law. But when one of their con jobs goes awry, Oliver ends up in the hands of a sweet, lonely, little rich girl named Jenny. Suddenly, Oliver is living the high-life in a Fifth Avenue penthouse, much to the chagrin of Jenny’s prize-winning, pampered poodle, Georgette. When the old gang shows up to rescue Oliver from his ritzy new life, they’re disappointed to find that he wants to stay with Jenny. Their human ringleader, Fagin, however, is more than happy to send Oliver home, if he can get a healthy ransom in the process. Fagin isn’t really a bad guy, he’s just one step above homeless and has a really nasty loan-shark breathing down his neck. Jenny shows up on the dark and dangerous docks to pay Oliver’s ransom and rescue her little kitty, and her sadness is too much for Fagin to take, but loan-shark Sykes has no troubles from a conscience and sees a chance to make even more dirty money. He snatches up Jenny and plans to hold HER for ransom! Suddenly, Oliver, Dodger, Fagin and the gang find themselves on a desperate rescue mission to save Jenny from the ruthless Sykes and his bloodthirsty Doberman Pinschers, Roscoe and Desoto, and even Georgette is getting in on the heroic action!

There’s no doubt about it, Disney’s wonderfully charming classic “Oliver and Company” is one of the most dated animated films you’ll ever see. Of course, that’s a big part of its charm. What could be more “`80s” than 1980s New York City? How about the music of Billy Joel and Huey Lewis? I know they were two favorites of mine in the `80s! Okay, to be honest, Billy Joel and Huey Lewis aside, the `80s is something you look back on and mock rather than view fondly, especially the clothes, and Oliver and Company captures that aspect, along with many others, perfectly. So, it’s dated. Everything is, really. Call it nostalgia. Anywho, as strongly `80s as “Oliver and Company” is, it rises above it! It is simply a great film! That’s something that’s easy to forget if you haven’t seen it in a while. “Oliver and Company” is Disney’s twist on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” and it is an EXCELLENT modernization! All the best characters are there, and the cast is star-studded! The piano man himself, Billy Joel, voices the artful Dodger, a canine so cool he puts Snoopy to shame (we still love ya, Snoopy)! The hilarious Cheech Marin is Tito the Chihuahua, animation alumnus Dom Deluise is Fagin, the divine Bette Midler is one of Disney’s funniest characters as Georgette, Robert Loggia is the excellently slimy villain, Sykes, and a very young Joey Lawrence plays Oliver, just to name a few! With seamlessly incorporated computer animation and painstakingly acquired “dog’s eye view” shots of New York City, “Oliver and Company” was the film that kicked off Disney’s big comeback as an animation heavyweight, though this cute little film was easily forgotten in the wake of Disney’s mega-hit, “The Little Mermaid,” the following year. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the magic of “Oliver and Company” yourself! Even the soundtrack is terrific, despite that it is powerfully “80s.” And, it’s amazing how well Disney has translated “Oliver Twist” into a tale about cats and dogs on the streets of New York without losing the heart of the tale and its underlying messages. The DVD is fantastic as well, especially for a single-disc Disney release! This is the way DVDs should be! In addition to the widescreen presentation of the film, you get a behind the scenes featurette from the original theatrical release, 2 shorter featurettes, a TV spot, theatrical trailers, a scrapbook gallery of art and other materials, 2 sing-along-songs, and the best part: You get two classic Disney shorts! Included as extras are “Puss Cafe,” a hilarious Pluto cartoon where the pup goes up against two troublesome felines invading his backyard, and “Lend a Paw,” the Oscar winning Mickey Mouse short in which Pluto saves a kitten from drowning and quickly regrets it. Outstanding stuff, and an amazing selection of extras for a single-disc Disney DVD! Rediscover this Disney Classic on DVD today! You won’t regret it!

During the 80’s, the studio hit an artistic, creative, and commercial slump. However, I still find that I quite enjoy Disney’s 80’s films, many of which experimented with computer animation, non-musical storylines, and different source materials. One of my favorite pre-Little Mermaid 80’s Disney films is Oliver and Company. Boasting a soundtrack filled with great songs and a wonderful cast of characters, Oliver and Company finally gets the DVD treatment, albeit a less-than-stellar one.

For one, the transfer is good, but it could be much better and it has a fair amount of grain.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Oliver and Company! Click Here

The bonus features could have been much better as well. A few fluff EPK-type featurettes, which are nice, but still fluffy, are sadly enough the meat of the bonuses. Also included, fortunately, are the original trailer, original TV spot, and the 1995 re-release trailer. Two sing-alongs are included as well as two classic Disney short cartoons.

Overall, it’s nice to see Oliver and Company on DVD at last. This is probably the best DVD edition Disney will give it for at least a while, so if you’re considering picking it up, go for it.

Cinema Paradiso is one of my favorite movies. I finally found the new version available for rent through Netflix when I couldn’t find it in any Blockbuster.
For those who have already seen Cinema Paradiso it needs no introduction. For everybody else, it won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film in 1989 and features one of the most nostalgic treatments of the role of movies in people’s lives. Ennio Morricone’s theme song has also been recycled in countless commercials and movie montages and trailers.
What’s good about the Director’s Cut or “New Version” DVD is that one can view the director’s cut with added scenes on one DVD side and the originally released version on the other.
For those of us who wanted some kind of closure to Toto and Elena’s relationship, the Director’s Cut has it– there’s about an hour more of footage of their relationship. The new version also more footage of Toto’s military service and his adulthood. The added scenes somewhat mute the focus of the movie, so I could see why they were originally cut out. But, at the same time, the added scenes fill in the blanks that originally made a lot of us think, “Hey– What about…?” And although Toto’s childhood scenes are, as far as I can tell, unchanged from the original version, we also find out more about Alfredo.
After finishing the New Version I appreciated the original version better. I highly recommend the new version not because it makes Cinema Paradiso more of a masterpiece, but because it adds more characterization to what, arguably, is a masterpiece. The added scenes can be a bit superfluous, but they show how important editorial decisions are to shaping the structure and momentum of a movie.

I became aware of the existence of over 50 minutes of additional scenes in this film in the past two years. The original, pruned version received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990. I have owned the video for a decade. Then, last summer, the “new version” was shown in limited release, and a DVD was promised. With the addition of the deleted scenes, an entirely different film is created. Owning this DVD is owning a brand new version of the film’s events.

Initially, the film was considered too long, and massive scenes were cut, removing any and all references to whatever happened to Salvatore’s great love, Lina. The original version of the film focused mainly on the young boy, fatherless in post-WWII Sicily, bonding with the childless cinema projectionist, Alfredo. The young Toto grows into the teen-aged Salvatore, who falls in love with the beautiful and unattainable Lina. They are parted. That is the last we see. Salvatore returns to his village many years later to attend the funeral of Alfredo, and the film is told nearly entirely in flashback.

In this version, Salvatore is reunited with his lost love when he returns for the funeral. To think that this entire plot was removed from the film initially is almost unthinkable. There are other parts of the film that could have been edited to keep these additional scenes in. I don’t know what the producers, directors or the studio were thinking when they edited a huge part of the movie out.

Well, now the film is complete. Whereas the original version focused mainly on the relationship of Toto and Alfredo, we now see a conclusion to Toto and Lina as well. And, we understand the ending of the film in an entirely, much less sentimental light. Salvatore has spent the bulk of his life mourning his lost love, not returning to his village, and not knowing of Alfredo’s hand in the matter. He is facing life-changing decisions, and must ultimately dip into a pool of acceptance and forgiveness. Without the addition of these scenes, the point is lost.

This was an excellent film to begin with, now it is nearly perfect. It is bittersweet and touching, and all the more realistic with the deleted scenes returned. If you own the original version, you must own this version. You will see this film in a completely different light.

In my oppinion, Infinite Ryvius is one of the most overlooked animes ever to hit the market. Few will have seen it, few will talk about it. But trust me, this is like finding a gold mine.
HOWEVER, it should clearly be defined that if you dont like complex storylines, if you dont like to “assume things over” or sit down and ponder about what honest happened, this is definitely not for you. You wont eye considerable action. You wont discover remarkable blood. You wont eye any fan-service. What you will stare, is in depth character descriptions, a complex storyline, and so grand emotional dispute that i had to assume a wreck from it at one point.

Music: 9/10

The opening of Infinite Ryvius was uplifting and alive. And there are objective some odd sound affects that I found very engrossing. My common fragment was the ending. Its really gorgeous and worth hearing. Its like a handsome chorale! The music that was there was really superior, however, I expected there to be more though.

Plot: 8/10

The spot is uninteresting involving. Many kids exhibit up, and the main character is Kouji Aiba and his friends are there as well. The anecdote takes region in the future after a Gadault is made and there are many mysteries about it (I judge it’s a magnetic thing) . Many kids are on a situation trainings center called Lieba Delta. Its like a school, except for the fact that its in outer position. At first everything is desirable, there’s an elite group of students called the Zwei, and instructers. Unfortunately, the training center falls into the enormous gravitational pull of the Gadault. The instructors give their lives to set the children, who sight a ship inside the Lieba Delta called Ryvius. A mysterious battleship, with overwhelming power that the students try to understand after they board the ship. Students slowly go down a spiral into insanity… will they ever be rescued? The Ryvius is not completely invincible…

What I liked about the location was the emotions. However, the site wasn’t all that distinct. There are a lot of times where the yarn wanders from the main position and tells about individual characters, however, the stories of the characters and how they interact naturally is probably the biggest point in the state.

Characters: 10/10

Characters are, as I mentioned before, the most critical fraction of the anecdote (mostly 16 year olds) . The epic about how the characters react to the status and the station. There are a lot of students to be shown, and it might regain a dinky confusing. The change in the characters, how they learn from the dwelling they were forced into, makes the anime very emotional and worth watching.

Characters descriptions *minor SPOILERS*:

Kouji Aiba: main character, likes to have people like him and not excited with him. He seems to have a quandary for saying what he really thinks, and has a really annoying erroneous laugh. He is usually average in his grade. I didn’t really like this character, however, his change after the many incidents is much.

Yuuki Aiba: Kouji’s younger brother. He’s #1 in his class. A very shining kid, but usually sounds irrated when he talks and REALLY likes to talk relieve to many things, and is extremely stubborn and has ideas of his fill. He really hates his brother.

Ikumi Oze: A friend of Kouji, Ikumi is a bit inactive, but also very top-notch at what he does in the Lieba Delta. Ikumi shows signs of a difficult past, always saying that he will never do `nothing’ again, that if he had another chance…

Kozue: A girl who really likes Ikumi, and never gives up on him.\

Aoi: Kouji and Yuuki Aiba’s childhood friend. She cares a lot about both of them, and said that, she came to the lieba delta to grasp care of them. She strongly believes in her friends, and encourages Kouji to say what he really believes in. (Aoi is a very significant character, and is the main character in the manga version of Infinite Ryvius)

Faina: A irregular aristocratic girl from Uranus with a weasel.- believes in getting rid of the past to depart forward.

Aires Blue: leader of a gang and gets a gun to gather power.

Zwei: An elite group of students that are well trained to navigate the ship.

Other: many more characters are too be seen, and some are very comical ^_^

Overall: 8.5-9/10

I really enjoyed the chronicle, however, I found it a bit long. I would recommend this for those who liked to wonder about the future and likes long dramas with lots of character inspiration. If you do not like to believe things over and usually unprejudiced examine stuff for the surface and comic jokes, etc, you might not acquire this prove great. Its better when you really try to feel each characters state. *beautiful ending* Hope you luxuriate in this as great as I did! I contemplate this is a respectable select, but depends on what you like to examine.

beware, its LONG!

While I admit there is nothing groundbreaking within this series it nonetheless has an infectious quality to it which drew me in from the first moment and left me loving this anime. There is much to love about this anime even within what others have said is lack of originality, so much so that I think it becomes a very comfortable anime to watch, and one that will leave you wanting more by the time you finish this first disc.

Buy,Download, Or Stream DearS - 1st Contact! Click Here

Others have compared DearS, and rightly so, to a Chobits meets Girls Bravo type of plot mix. It is very much filled with ideas found within both of those anime, however it is also within these very similarities that the characters of DearS start to shine and take on lives of their own, making them unique within a commonplace set of ideas.

It cannot be understated that it is the writing itself which allows this characters to be brought so to life and create such a wonderful feeling that you will love this anime from start to finish on this first disc and be left wanting more, the mark of a great performance.

So while I cannot deny there is nothing groundbreaking and much of the plot might seem familiar, I can say that in spite of this DearS has an irresistible charm all of it’s own that makes this anime a worthy entry in anyone’s collection.

An alien exchange student themed show in which a high school student Ikuhara Takeya met a girl from an alien species called DearS who crashed their spaceship in Tokyo Bay a year ago. This theme is the perfect setup for romance, comedy and fan service. You can tell it has tons of fan service just from the reversible cover of the DVD. Nevertheness, this show is quite entertaining.

The volume 1 of DearS is plagued with an authoring mistake - the English language track is mono. Geneon has set up an exchange program with the Right Stuff International Inc. You just have to send the defective disc in and they will replace it with a corrected one.

What is lacking is a tour of each of the finished pieces made during the 1 week residency, nicely displayed in a suitable setting so that the artistry could be best appreciated. Could even have been done as a separate simple slide show of images lasting 5 to 10 minutes as a DVD extra.

The beautiful colors & fascinating techniques seen upclose have never been more crystal clear. Chihuly is AMAZING! I read the other review & I can tell you that there is a “wallpaper” DVD that is a Blu-ray title (shot in 1080P) of Chihuly’s work - it is from the same company. It is called Chihuly In Moods. I am a fan of the BBC shows but, not having cable, only see what I rent. The book, Wind in the Willows, is an old favorite of mine, though, so I felt good about purchasing the movies. When I previewed them (I always preview, even when a movie rating states it is appropriate for children) I was happy with the interpretation of the tales yet admittedly a little concerned that the stop-motion characters might be boring for my children. They are used to the flash and noise of Disney, Warner Bros. and other animation giants. Still, the content was good so I handed them over. Both my son and daughter sat through the entire movie, then the 5 year old wanted to watch it again. The Tale of Two Toads also got their attention and now both movies are watched on a regular basis. It’s good to see my children can appreciate the art and more subtle humor of movies such as these in addition to the prompted-responses typical in modern animation.

I love The Wind in the Willows. I love them all. I dont know how to convince you to buy this but I’d start by making the suggestion to buy this one first watch The Wind in The Willows, then A Tale of TWo Toads, purchase series one and two and three if they really have one. I heard there was a series three but I haven’t bought it yet. Then watch them all over again. I’m a 33 year old woman and I saw these when I was young something about them just stuck with me. It wasn’t til a few months ago that I re-discovered them since childhood. There’s something poetic and classic and beautiful about them. The stop animation, the details of the characters and the voices…all of it poetry. With a beautiful peaceful message of living life with simplicity and appreciating all the beauty nature and the whole world offers. Something like that you get what I’m trying to put across here. It’s beautiful, really enjoyable and leaves you feeling at peace with the way things are, really at peace with simplicity and what treasures say a warm cup of hot chocolate could bring on a rainy day all safely tucked inside your dry warm home. Things like that..that’s what the wind in the willows brings. I hope you dont miss your chance or your children dont miss the chance to enjoy that.

The reason for my review is in hopes of saving you some money. This double disc Special Edition doesn’t deliver the price you pay for it. There isn’t even deleted scenes!!! I would save your very hard earned dollars and buy the single disc version and wait for the inevitable ULTIMATE re-release that will come later on down the road.

But nonetheless, a great film - you will not be dissapointed; I just wish the studio would have given a better Special Edition release than what we have here. So enjoy!

Christopher Nolan has a vision. And whether you agree with it or not, he undeniably completes it in “The Dark Knight”–a vicious, engrossing, overwhelming, intelligent event- film that re-defines ‘comic-book-flicks’. In Nolan’s grim, dark-depiction of Gotham-City (the crime-ridden hell protected by legendary superhero Batman), the director strives to make everything real (something he began in the well-received “Batman Begins”). He makes it plausible, possible. And yet there’s more to it: just as ‘Begins’ was a dissection of myth, the nature of symbols and heroes, ‘Knight’ is the escalation of that notion. It’s a biblical- confrontation of ‘good-and-evil’, yet as ‘good-and-evil’ really exist: a conflict of ideals, something that can’t be purely-defined but that is relative to a viewpoint. In Nolan’s world, the line of villainy and heroism isn’t crossed… it’s non-existent. The bad-guys don’t see themselves as bad-guys, and as such something so unnervingly-real comes across it might fly past some people’s minds (no insult to anybody, it’s just common that people don’t look deep into ‘popcorn-flicks’): the battle is a complete ambiguity.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dark Knight! Click Here

The film runs at nearly 2.5-hours, yet never ceases to lose interest or momentum. It doesn’t waste a scene or moment; every event is utilized and necessary. ‘The Dark Knight’ tells a story worth telling and it takes the proper amount of time to tell it. Action-sequences are frantic, old-school, eye-grabbing stunts (vastly superior to ‘Begins’) and in their chaotic intensity we see that they serve purpose to the story, yet more interesting are not played for pure entertainment-value: we are meant to watch, petrified, simply hoping that the outcome will go the hero’s way. Attention is never lost because we are immersed in a breathtaking, almost completely-unpredictable story (it packs many a shock), that makes us think and more importantly gains our emotional-investment. We come to care for the characters, because they are believable, developed, and personified fully.

Everyone has great-chemistry together. Maggie Gyllenhal is a more mature Rachel Dawes than Katie Holmes. Morgan Freeman provides his authoritative presence to the role of bad- gadget-inventor/Wayne-Enterprise CEO Lucius Fox, and under anyone else’s portrayal, the part would be less-memorable. Gary Oldman underplays his world-wearied lawman with such honest-nobility, you never feel for a second any of its forced-acting. The irreplaceable Michael Caine makes a gentle, reassuring, father-like presence as Alfred, and the movie would surely fail without his strong-presence and interjected-moments of light-humor.

And while everyone (rightfully) pours the praise unto Bale and Ledger, I think most are glancing-over Knight’s breakout-performance. As Harvey Dent, Aaron Eckhart does more than hold himself in the company of such a renowned-cast. He makes his presence known, whether he’s playing on the easy-going charisma of Gotham’s ‘White-Knight’ or the broken and damaged, twisted-soul of Two-Face. He achieves a full-impact with the tragedy that comes unto his character, and so closely connects with Dent, that he makes his pain tangible for us: we sympathize even as we become terrified. He captures both facets of each personality flawlessly.

Now, some people cite that ‘Knight’ has a potential fatal-flaw in the supposedly wooden- acting of Christian Bale. Admittedly, his development is not as grand as in ‘Begins’ (yet that film gave us such a good psychoanalysis of Wayne, we hardly need more), yet what Bale pulls off is admirable. Wayne is not an eccentric personality. He is a disillusioned man who can hardly find any joy in having no family, giving up his love-interest and spending his life fighting a battle that may never end. He’s dark and conflicted, and Bale plays up on that brooding-mood by making Wayne look as though a thousand dark-things were on his mind. He’s not wooden…he’s a humorless, quiet individual. Even when Wayne is acting as a frivolous playboy for the public, every now and then Bale offers us a powerful glance that reminds us its all a façade; that deep down, something more disturbed irks him. Occasionally he offers a broken-smile when exchanging banter with Alfred, letting us know that beyond the dour depression of the Caped-Crusader lies a damaged human-being. It is only in the guise of a growling masked-man, that he can unleash his true, ferocious personality.

Finally, who could forget Heath Ledger. Now, when he was first-announced for the part, I was (along with many other people) asking myself: “Why?”. Mr. Ledger had proved with ‘Brokeback Mountain’ he could deliver a potent performance. But he hadn’t before. It is only, after seeing this film, that I know the answer to ‘why?’: I see the significance of his loss.

When Heath appears in this movie, he is completely unrecognizable. His voice is distinctly-altered; a near-whiny, pedophile-like tone that sends shivers down the spine. His face is completely splattered with makeup that renders him both freakishly-nightmarish and strangely-funny. And when you see him, you don’t think it’s him. In this, his final performance, Ledger proved he was a chameleon. His two iconic performances in this, and ‘Brokeback’, could not be more different. I am convinced he could have been anything in his career. He commits so intensely to character that the line of actor/portrayal dies. His every tick and gesture only further-enhances his character. Heath never hams the role up or goes for something cheap: he delivers a fully-immersed display of psychotic madness…or do we just label him that to feel safer? The movie writes the character brilliantly; blending terrifying truth into his every social-accusation, and making us question why we laugh at his sick-jokes.

‘The Dark Knight’ has had an incredible-amount of hype running for it, from the get-go, mounting ever-higher, until Heath Ledger’s too-soon death. And the finished-product does more than exceed all of the near-impossible expectations placed on it. It becomes something much richer than a super-hero-franchise-saga. Christopher Nolan has opened a new door in cinema: allowing action-flicks to become more serious, capable of intelligence. He has transformed this into a piece of artwork, full of beauty, terror, moral-conundrums. This movie has changed things…forever.

There’s no going back. 10/10

Inspector Conan, the ace detective trapped within the body of a first-grader, solves more difficult cases. Constrained by the necessity of maintaining the illusion that he is nothing more than an unusually intelligent child, he usually explains his solution to the case by tranquilizing his guardian, Detective Mori, and simulating his voice. Why doesn’t anyone think it strange that they are being addressed by a slumped figure with eyes closed and lips unmoving? If logical lapses like this bother you, then avoid this series.

It was a very good movie. I collect all of the case closed episodes and they are all very good. Bill
